Our review

This refillable butane kitchen torch is the Amazon's Choice best-seller of its category — 4.4 stars across more than 13,000 ratings and over 10,000 sold a month — and it covers far more than crème brûlée. A piezo ignition lights it with one click, an adjustable dial takes the flame from a soft caramelising flame up to a concentrated jet that hits around 2500°F, and a continuous-flame lock lets you keep it lit hands-free for longer jobs like searing a steak, melting cheese, charring peppers, lighting charcoal or even soldering. A sliding safety lock stops accidental ignition, the aluminium body feels solid, and it refills in seconds (butane sold separately).

A couple of honest things to know. The lowest flame setting is genuinely weak — a few reviewers found it would sputter out, and the fix is simply to turn it up. Refilling can feel a little awkward the first time (purge the air with the included adapter and don't overfill, or you'll get unstable flares), and a minority report the ignition failing over time, which is reflected in the 7% one-star reviews. Most people, though, get years out of it and call it a sturdy, versatile little workhorse — and at around thirteen dollars it's an easy yes for anyone who likes to cook.

FAQ

Does it come with butane?

No — for safe shipping butane is sold separately. It includes three adapters that fit most cans and refills in seconds.

What can I use it for besides crème brûlée?

Searing steak, melting cheese, charring peppers, toasting marshmallows, lighting charcoal, and even light soldering or jewellery work.

Is the low flame setting weak?

Yes — the lowest setting can sputter; turn the dial up a little for a strong, steady flame.

Is it safe?

It has a sliding safety lock to prevent accidental ignition and an ergonomic grip; keep it away from children and follow the refill instructions.
